Name Mosaic Art

Name mosaic art is one of my top first day of school activities. Read Too Much Glue to preface this activity. Prep: Black constructrion paper, cut up pieces of colored paper into small squares, use a white crayon to write each name on the paper.

Kissing Hand

Kissing Hand is a great read aloud of the first few days of Kindergarten. With big emotions it's a great idea to do something to acknoweldge and adress the emotions that are Kinders might be feeling as they transiton to school. I love making this and sending it home right away for families to share and read every morning before school.

How many letters in our name graph

A great prerequisite to our Chicka Chicka Boom Boom letter name craft below.

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Name Craft

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is a back to school requirement! Just a fun book to start talking about letters. Ask families for paper towel rolls (make this request in your first email or back to school letter so you have them right away). Give each student stickers with the letters of their names on them so they can have their name climb the coconut tree. Grab the template for the coconut tree here.

Water Color Self Portrait

Is giving brand new Kindergarteners water colors and sharpies the most brilliant idea? Maybe not but the sooner we introduce these tools the sooner they learn to use them appropriatly. I LOVE having my students use sharpies for different projects. Plus water coloring just always seems to bring out the calm in our class. For this activity all you need is cardstock, watercolor supplies, printer paper and sharpies. I break this activity into two parts either across a day or two days with the first part water coloring and then later drawing a self portrait with sharpie. I do the cutting out and glueing.

Ps. These are watercolor self portraits I had my Kinders due for Open House towards the end of the year. The beginning of the year ones look a lot more mixed colored and the self portraits are much more stick figures. But it's a fun beginning of the year and end of the year art work to see the art progress! Also a great cover for an end of the year portfolio.
