A Fun & Academic Way to Announce Your Pregnancy to Students (Secret Message Math Activity)

First Day of School -> Last Day of School

When I was ready to share my pregnancy news with my 5th graders, I wanted the moment to feel special, fun, and still connected to learning. I was announcing the week before Winter Break, so I knew my students would be extra excited—and I needed an activity that kept them engaged academically while creating a memorable surprise.

Because my class had such a wide range of math levels (everything from single-digit addition to multi digit division), I didn’t want students finishing at completely different times and accidentally shouting out the secret. I needed an activity every student could work on independently and successfully.

This Secret Message Math Worksheet is a differentiated “crack the code” activity where the final message reveals:“My teacher is having a baby!”

How I Used the Secret Message Activity in My Classroom

On the day I told them, I printed out the math pages and wrote each student’s name on the version that matched their math level. When I passed them out, I told the class:

“You’ll be working independently and silently on this math game. When you solve the problems, you’ll uncover a secret message. Please don’t shout it out—let everyone discover it on their own!”

The room was silent as my students dug into their problems, filling in letters as they went, so excited to crack the code. One by one, their heads bolted up in surprise and excitement as they uncovered the message. It was such a sweet, joyful moment and a memory I’ll never forget.

Why This Secret Message Activity Works So Well

Every student gets the same level of excitement and success—no matter their math level. The differentiated options allow you to choose the perfect worksheet for each learner so everyone can participate without feeling overwhelmed or finishing too quickly.

This makes it perfect for: Kindergarten, 1st Grade, 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade, 4th Grade, 5th Grade and the varying math levels within your grade level.
